Types of Power Cords

An AC power cord supplies electricity from an electrical source to electrical equipment or appliances. In addition to use with electrical power tools, lighting, household appliances, musical instruments, shop equipment, and for personal purposes, they can also be applied to a wide range of other items as this is the most common type of power cord.

Plugs, voltage capacities, and electrical receptacle configurations are standardized by NEMA power cords. Plugs with NEMA Type A have two conductors or prongs, while plugs with Type B have a third grounding rod. Cord sets must adhere to different standards in other parts of the world.

Generator power cords are designed and built specifically to meet the needs of generators. There are many options available, including 15 amps to 30 amps, as well as a variety of connectors. Power cord types include 5, L5, L14, 14, TT, and CS, corresponding with receptacle labels where L14-30P indicates a twist lock and 30 amp plug. Before you consult with an expert, it is beneficial to learn the terminology in order to narrow down what you need.

PC Power Cords

In order to be able to build your PC the right way, it's essential for you to know what each power connector coming out of your power supply does, just like how it's important to know how efficient it is.

Power cables are used to connect a computer's power supply unit (PSU) to a power source, usually an electrical outlet. Powered by the cable, the PSU distributes electrical power to the motherboard, CPU, storage drives, and other components of the computer.

In computer power cables, the ground, neutral, and live wires are all connected by a three-pronged cable. Ground wires provide a safety connection to earth ground, while the live wire carries the electrical current.

An electrical outlet and the computer's power supply are connected by the computer's power cable. An external power supply can also be used with some computers, which is a separate unit that plugs into an electrical outlet and connects to the computer via a power cable.

Electrical damage can be prevented by using the correct power cable, which matches the computer's power supply's voltage and amperage rating. It is possible to damage the power supply by using a cable that is not rated for the correct voltage and amperage.

Universal Power Cords & Country-Specific Power Cords

Power can be transferred between different devices using a universal power cord. As they're cheaper than buying a replacement power cord from the device manufacturer, they're commonly used in place of lost or damaged power cords. The universal power cord can be stored as a convenient spare in case one of your regular cords fails. There are several types of universal power cords, but the most common type is a simple connector that connects from the wall outlet to an adapter that supplies the lower voltage to your device.

There is a wide variety of power cords available. Aside from that, plug types and standards may differ from country to country. You can easily find out which Power Cords are used in what countries at Signal and Power. We stock power cords for countries including Australia/New Zealand, Argentina, India, Italy, and Russia.

Splitter Power Cords

Two devices can be powered from the same outlet with the help of an AC power cord splitter. In addition to NEMA 5-15P, NEMA 5-15R, and IEC320 C13 power cord splitters, AWG power cord splitters can be used for monitors, TVs, computers, and displays. Our AC cord splitters come in a variety of lengths, and we make ordering quick and easy!

Frequently Asked Question

An AC power cord consists of a mains plug connected to a flexible cord rated for AC current, not DC current. An appliance connector or a permanent cord connection may be used at the other end of the cord.

Take your cable and create an overhand loop, then flip it and create an underhand loop. In this way, you will be able to coil the cable into a nice circular shape by repeating the steps.

Power cords often stop working due to being poorly handled or coming in contact with liquid or a dangerous substance. Poor usage of the cable is the most common reason as the cords may constantly be pulled out of a power socket aggressively and then put away in a damaging way such as too tightly packed or with heavy objects resting on it.
